Bioscience represents a major source of potential economic development, bringing with it high paying jobs and an educated workforce.  It also represents part of the answer to fighting chronic disease through innovation, as well as new products and treatments.

Chronic diseases – on-going, generally incurable illnesses, such as asthma, cancer, diabetes, and heart disease – are the #1 cause of death and disability and the #1 driver of rising health care costs in the United States.

This third installment of the BioPharma in Ohio conference series will focus on chronic conditions.  For Ohio, what are the challenges, trends and opportunities around the dramatic impact of chronic diseases?  Should Ohio’s research institutions and business focus more attention on the diseases that account for 75 percent of our health care dollar?

Please join our keynote speaker Dr. Kenneth Thorpe, executive director of the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease, and professor and chair of the Department of Health Policy & Management, in the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.  Following Dr. Thorpe’s address, panel discussions featuring Ohio researchers, innovators and business leaders will further explore Ohio’s ability to connect bioscience to chronic conditions.

The Business/Bioscience (Biz/Bio) forums were established to inform and educate civic and government leaders about the rewards and consequences of their actions in establishing and maintaining a successful bioscience cluster.
